High Representative of the Union for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy, Ms. Catherine Ashton’s Declaration on behalf of the EU on the Georgian strategy on Abkhazia and South Ossetia RSS RSS

The European Union Monitoring Mission (EUMM) is a unique endeavour in EU Common Security and Defence Policy (CSDP).  In order to monitor the implementation of the peace agreements of 12 August and 8 September, which have been brokered by the European Union, and to contribute to stabilisation and normalisation in post-conflict Georgia, the foreign ministers of the 27 Member States decided on 15 September to deploy a civilian and unarmed monitoring mission.

In only two weeks – by October 1st -, EU succeeded to deploy more than 200 monitors from 22 Member States on the ground. This has been the fastest deployment of a mission, the EU has ever done. Nowadays the EUMM has monitors from 26 Member States.
