As part of the International Day’s activities in the Field Office Zugdidi (FOZ) monitors attended Merkuri NGO Association’s ‘Zugdidi Run’ event in the Botanical Garden in Zugdidi. The event was well attended by supporters, including EUMM representatives, and approximately 40 female runners participated in the almost three km course around the park.
Merkuri Association’s ‘Zugdidi run’ is one of several events organized by the civil community in Samegrelo throughout the week to mark International Women’s Day (IWD) on 8 March. FOZ chose to support this particular activity in line with this year’s theme for IWD ‘make it happen’ as it was the first women’s running event taking place in Zugdidi and also the first time several of the participants from a broad age range participated in such an activity. FOZ supported the event through supplying number badges for each runner, flyers and posters for the event and provided medals for the first three places.
Three participants, one from each FOZ team from EUMM participated in the event and adopted a very sporting approach to their racing strategy to ensure they did not finish in the top three and finished a commendable joint 4th place. A number of EUMM staff came to support their colleagues and the event on their day off and attendance was well appreciated by the organizers, while several other supporters received information leaflets and EUMM flags which were a real feature of the event. Local media was present to film the running event after which a selection of talented local singers performed a concert which brought the day to a positive and memorable conclusion.
