We are an unarmed civilian monitoring mission of the European Union. We were deployed in October 2008 following the EU-mediated Six Point Agreement which ended the August war.
Ever since our deployment in October 2008 we have been patrolling day and night, particularly in the areas adjacent to Abkhazia and South Ossetia to help EU decision-makers shape their policy in Georgia and the wider region.
Our priorities are to ensure that there is no return to hostilities, to facilitate the resumption of a safe and normal life for the communities living in the areas adjacent to the Administrative Boundary Lines, to build confidence among the parties and to inform EU policy in Georgia and the wider region.
Whenever an incident or other security-related issue occurs, we facilitate information exchange between the parties in order to help clarify the situation, and avoid any creation or escalation of tensions.
The EUMM marked the European Heritage Days by strengthening its monitoring of cultural heritage sites that are significant to the conflict-affected communities in Georgia. Particularly for the people who are affected by the conflict the most, access to cultural sites and the possibility to maintain their customs and traditions provides them with a sense of normal life.
This afternoon, a patrol of the European Union Monitoring Mission (EUMM) was temporarily held by security actors while conducting a routine patrol near the Abkhaz Administrative Boundary Line (ABL) in the Khurcha area. The monitors were released unharmed and in good health.

EUMM Georgia has officially moved into its new Field Office in Zugdidi. This marks a significant milestone in the Mission’s ongoing efforts to maintain its operational capabilities along the Abkhaz Administrative Boundary Line
My name is Vera, I am an EU Monitoring Mission (EUMM) Monitor from the Field Office Mtskheta, and I came to Georgia in October 2017. My job is to observe the Administrative Boundary Line with South Ossetia together with my EU colleagues and to report about the security situation...
I have known from the moment I applied for the position of Monitor in EU Monitoring Mission (EUMM) Georgia, that it fits me and I fit it also! I have no doubts that it is one of the best choices of my working professional life thus far. It was a new goal, a new challenge, one worth taking and I did!
I am in Georgia for the second time. In 2016/2017, I worked for EU Monitoring Mission (EUMM) in Mtskheta Field Office and since April 2019, I am happy to work in Gori Field Office. I consider it a privilege to be able to return to Georgia for a second tour of duty, and I am very grateful for having this opportunity. Working with professional international as well as with national colleagues, who all come from different backgrounds (civilian, police, military), is on one hand a personal benefit for me, but constitutes an even bigger benefit for the Mission.
When I was a kid, perhaps 8-9 years old, I had a notebook in which I wrote down all the capitals of the world. I was fascinated by the world outside of my room in Malmo, Sweden, and somehow Tbilisi really appealed to me. After completing studies in political science and an MA in Human Rights, I worked initially in Kosovo for an international NGO specialising in minority rights...
Back in 2008, when I first heard in the news about an ongoing conflict in Georgia, the whole scenario seemed to be so far away. I had never visited the South Caucasus before, but now I find myself in Zugdidi at the heart of it. Last October, I joined the Administrative Boundary Line (ABL) Team of Field Office Zugdidi...
