VISIT OF THE MINISTER OF FOREIGN AFFAIRS OF THE KINGDOM OF THE NETHERLANDS, MR MAXIME VERHAGEN TO THE EUMM FIELD OFFICE GORI

12.02.2009

The Dutch Foreign Minister, Mr Maxime Verhagen, visited the EUMM Field Office in Gori on Thursday 12 February as part of a two day visit to Georgia. He was briefed on the work of the European Union Monitoring Mission and the security situation in the areas adjacent to the administrative boundary lines by the Deputy Head of the EUMM, General Gilles Janvier.

General Janvier described the security situation as generally calm, although incidents do take place and many civilians do not consider the situation as stable. The EUMM is trying to work with all the relevant authorities, de facto South Ossetian and Abkhazian, as well as Georgian, to bring about a conflict prevention mechanism that will enhance security and stability in the adjacent areas.

Mr Verhagen repeated the commitment of the Netherlands in supporting the EUMM, reflected in the fact that there are 10 Dutch people working in the Mission.

The Minister went on to meet local people in the village of Karaleti, before joining the Dutch members of the Mission in Mtskheta for lunch.
