EUMM Celebrates the White Ribbon Campaign on 25 November

25.11.2009
The EU Monitoring Mission (EUMM) in Georgia will join the world-wide White Ribbon Campaign which starts on the International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women on 25 November. The White Ribbon Campaign is the largest male-led campaign to advocate for the eradication of violence against women, and in Georgia is coordinated by the United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA).

EUMM male and female staff in Tbilisi, Mtskheta, Gori and Zugdidi will wear a white ribbon to express support for the cause of the campaign. During its monitoring activities, Mission members will explain the reason for wearing the ribbon, and hand them out to representatives of the Georgian administration, the police, the military and the local population. A total of 600 ribbons will be distributed across the country. The EUMM will also hold school presentations as part of the Mission’s outreach activities.

The White Ribbon Campaign started in 1991, when a few men in Canada decided to join forces and to urge men to speak out about violence against women. They wore a white ribbon as a symbol of men's opposition to violence against women, and 100,000 men across Canada followed their example. Since 1991, White Ribbon Campaigns have been organized in over 55 countries. The 16 days of activism against violence against women will end on the International Human Rights Day on 10 December.
