EUMM meets chiefs of Georgian police units

06.02.2013
On 5 February, Ambassador Andrzej Tyszkiewicz, the Head of the European Union Monitoring Mission, together with representatives of the EUMM Field Offices and Mission management, had a meeting with the chiefs of the police units from western Georgia.

The purpose of the meeting in Kutaisi was to explain the role of the EUMM in detail to the police chiefs, some of whom have only recently been appointed. During the meeting, David Sujashvili, the Head of the Analytical Department of the Georgian Ministry of Internal Affairs (MIA), underscored the importance of the presence of the EUMM on the ground.

The structure, mandate, role and activities of the Mission were explained. The Memorandum of Understanding, signed between the Mission and the MIA after the 2008 war to ensure the transparency of the police, was discussed in detail, including the commitments undertaken by the Ministry. As Ambassador Tyszkiewicz underlined, a better understanding of the work of the Mission by the police forces will facilitate the work of the EU Monitors on the ground.

On 7 February EUMM staff are taking part in a similar meeting with the police chiefs from eastern Georgia. In December last year a successful  meeting along the same lines took place with senior representatives of the Georgian Ministry of Defence.
