EUMM to host media roundtable on peace journalism in Zugdidi

25.07.2014
On 28 July 2014 the EU Monitoring Mission (EUMM), in partnership with the Institute for War and Peace Reporting (IWPR), is hosting a roundtable discussion in the Samegrelo-Zemo Svaneti region in order to present the EU Special Prize for Peace Journalism and raise awareness about the role of media in confidence-building.

During the roundtable journalists and media professionals will take stock of the current media situation in the Samegrelo-Zemo Svaneti region and discuss ways to enhance conflict-sensitive reporting. They will also receive all necessary information about the Special Prize, including its eligibility criteria and rules.

The EU Special Prize for Peace Journalism will be awarded to one of the best balanced and unbiased articles in print or online media; television or radio reports; webpages, blogs or social media initiatives; news agency or online newspaper contributions.

The winner will be awarded a EUR 5, 000 voucher to participate in a one-month fellowship at the Head Office of the Institute of War and Peace Reporting in London. Detailed information, including application forms, can be viewed on the Prize’s website: www.euprizejournalism.ge or www.eumm.eu.

The EU Special Prize for Peace Journalism aims to acknowledge and enhance professional, ethical and conflict-sensitive reporting, without which it is impossible to overcome divides and build confidence between communities. It takes place within the framework of the EU Prize for Journalism, which acknowledges professional and ethical journalism in Georgia. The project is implemented by the EU Monitoring Mission (EUMM), in partnership with the Institute for War and Peace Reporting (IWPR). It is funded by the European Union.

The EU Prize for Journalism was launched on 06 May 2014 in order to mark World Press Freedom Day. Olesya Vartanyan, a journalist for RFE/RL’s Ekho Kavkaza service, won the EU Special Prize for Peace Journalism last year. This year, the deadline for entries is 03 November 2014.
