Representatives of the Georgian Public Defender’s Office visit EUMM

On 25 July 2014 Medea Turashvili, the Senior Adviser to the Public Defender of Georgia on Human Rights Issues in Conflict Affected Regions, visited EUMM’s Field Office in Zugdid together with regional representatives of the Public Defender’s Office.

They met with the Head of the Field Office Gabriel von Horn and discussed issues related to the freedom of movement of local communities living along the Administrative Boundary Line with Abkhazia, as well as their general human rights situation.  

Earlier, on 18 July, the Public Defender of Georgia Ucha Nanuashvili met with the Head of EUMM Toivo Klaar in Tbilisi with the aim of exchanging information and strengthening their mutual cooperation. The Public Defender and the Head of EUMM reviewed past detention cases that occurred along the administrative boundary line, the human rights situation of the local population and other security related issues. The Public Defender informed representatives of the Mission about day-to-day problems faced by the local population. He also highlighted the importance of the Incident Prevention and Response Mechanism (IPRM) and stressed the importance of the resumption of IPRM meetings in Gali.
