On November 2, the Acting Head of Mission, Mr. Erik Høeg, welcomed the President of the Republic of Estonia, Her Excellency Ms. Kersti Kaljulaid.
Mr. Høeg delivered a short briefing to the President and to the Estonian Delegation about the European Union Monitoring Mission’s (EUMM) mandate, role and activities in Georgia.
Mr. Høeg emphasised the importance of Mission patrolling in maintaining stability and security along the administrative boundary lines between the two breakaway regions of South Ossetia and Abkhazia; and the territory under administrative control of the Georgian government. He also underlined the critical role of the Mission-facilitated hotline in maintaining communications between all the parties to the conflict and managing occurrences that take place at the administrative boundary lines.
Also, the Acting Head of Field Office Gori, Ms. Mihaela Gherasim, provided an overview of the recent developments in Field Office Gori’s Area of Responsibility. The discussion included developments regarding the installation of barriers to freedom of movement (‘borderisation’), and in particular the negative impact of these activities on the daily lives of the conflict-affected population.
The Estonian President thanked the Mission for the briefings and expressed her appreciation for the work of the monitoring mission.
The President also had a chance to briefly greet Estonian nationals working for the Mission as seconded and contracted staff. Mr. Høeg in this connection thanked for the continuing Estonian contribution and support to the EUMM.
