EU Monitoring Mission in Georgia visits the Academy of the Ministry of Internal Affairs of Georgia and explains the Mission’s mandate within its Outreach Programme

25.01.2018

On 25 January, the Deputy Head of the Operations Department of the EU Monitoring Mission (EUMM), Florentin Dicu, visited the Ministry of Internal Affairs (MIA) Academy of Georgia, accompanied by the Mission’s Liaison Officer to the State Security Service of Georgia and MIA, Pavels Sarigins. Florentin Dicu gave a briefing to Cadets on the importance of the Missions presence in Georgia, and EUMM’s contribution to managing stability on the ground.

During the lecture, the Deputy Head of the Operations Department gave Cadets a short overview of the Mission’s background, its work, and the pillars of its mandate.

He provided the group with an overview of the EU-brokered Six-point Ceasefire Agreement, and challenges related to its implementation.

Particular attention was paid to the work undertaken within the Incident Prevention and Response Mechanism (IPRM) meetings in both Gali and Ergneti, and the operation of the Mission-facilitated Hotline. Both the Hotline and IPRM meetings are vital tools in facilitating communication between all parties and thus assist in avoiding misunderstandings and reducing tensions on the ground.

The engaging lecture was followed by a Q&A session, where cadets showed their great interest in the EUMM’s mandate and activities, including Florentin Dicu’s opinion and perspective regarding the current state of play on the implementation of the Six-point ceasefire plan and conflict management in Georgia.
