Deputy Head of EUMM, Ms. Kate Fearon, explains the Mission’s mandate to the Institute for European Studies of Ivane Javakhishvili Tbilisi State University students, within its Outreach Programme

On 10 May, Deputy Head of EU Monitoring Mission (EUMM), Ms. Kate Fearon, met students of the Institute for European Studies of Ivane Javakhishvili Tbilisi State University, who are aspiring to become specialists in International Relations Social Policy, lawyers and diplomats. The event was dedicated to the 100th anniversary of Tbilisi State University and the Europe Day celebrations.

During the lecture, Ms. Kate Fearon gave the participants a short overview of the Mission’s background, its work, and the pillars of its mandate.

She provided the group with an overview of the EU-brokered Six Point Agreement and challenges related to its implementation. In addition, she talked about the Common Security and Defence Policy (CSDP) and explained the history of the EU civilian crisis management measures taken in Georgia and beyond by the EU throughout the years.

The lecture was followed by a Q&A session, during which wide range of issues were raised by students, including the Mission’s challenges and Georgia’s future relationship with the EU. The thought-provoking and engaging discussion also involved questions of women’s participation in and contributions to, peace negotiations.

The event was wrapped up by the IES-TSU administration with the short presentation of new publications within the framework of EU TEMPUS project “Innovating Teaching and Learning of European Studies” (INOTLES) as well as the new edition ENPI established bilingual Georgian Journal for European Studies. In the final part, Ms. Kate Fearon awarded the European Studies Master’s Programme IX intake graduates with graduation certificates.
