The EU Monitoring Mission hosts two Medical Security Courses in Tbilisi

11.06.2018

The EU Monitoring Mission (EUMM) Georgia hosted for the first time two (2) Medical Security Courses in the Mission Headquarters, Tbilisi, between 28 May and 9 June 2018. This course is conducted for civilian Common Security and Defence Policy (CSDP) Missions. The Swedish Contingencies Agency (MSB) conducted both courses. This Medical Security training was developed by the MSB for CSDP Missions and specifically for CSDP Mission safety and security personnel.

Each course was diverse in nature with a total of thirty four (34) students participating. Students came from EULEX Kosovo, EUAM Ukraine, EUCAP Mali, EUCAP Somalia, EUCAP Niger, EUBAM Libya, EUPOL COPPS, Civilian Planning and Conduct Capability (CPCC) and the host Mission. CSDP missions are constantly at risk of a medical emergency. This Medical Security training is a comprehensive theoretical, practical and simulation based five-day long course.

The course gave participants the knowledge, skills and ability required to prevent and respond in cases of medical emergencies in a safe, secure, timely and effective manner. Throughout the course, assessments and evaluations were carried out on each participant. Students, by the very nature of the course, must achieve the highest standards. By its very nature also, the training was carried out in simulated and real (exercise) conditions.

Conny Åkerblom, MSB Senior Programme Officer and Medical Security coordinator said - 34 very professional Security officers have been trained in the MSB Medical Security training course in Georgia. The results from the training are extremely good.

Mr. Fredrik Zethelius, Medical Security Chief Instructor said – Considering that in recent years the number of accidents and traumatic related incidents in the mission areas have increased, the Swedish MSB has, after a request from CPCC, developed a completely new Medical Security course. The first two pilot courses have now been successfully conducted at the EUMM Headquarters, Tbilisi, Georgia.

The EUMM has hosted various training courses in the past and welcomes such courses. The EUMM hosted the ‘Critical Incident Stress Management’ course in April 2018.

The course coordinator thanked the Mission and the senior mission security officer for their support.
