EUMM briefs EU Special Envoy for the Eastern Partnership and EU Member States’ diplomats

07.11.2023
This afternoon, EUMM Deputy Head of Mission, Dr. Tibor Kozma, provided a briefing to a delegation of EU Member States’ diplomats led by the EU Special Envoy for the Eastern Partnership, Dirk Schuebel. Dr. Kozma thoroughly informed the delegation about yesterday’s violent incident, where a Georgian citizen was shot and killed by Russian Federation Border Guards.

He explained that yesterday evening, EUMM facilitated an extraordinary meeting of the Incident Prevention and Response Mechanism (IPRM) in Ergneti, where the Mission strongly advocated for the immediate release of detainee Mr. Levan Dotiashvili. Furthermore, he affirmed that EUMM has increased its monitoring presence along the Administrative Boundary Lines and continues to facilitate the exchange of information through the EUMM-managed Hotline, with the primary objective of defusing tensions and preventing escalations.

Regular visits are a fundamental part of our mission to enhance understanding of the security situation on the ground, and the EU’s commitment to long-term stability in Georgia and the wider region. The visiting delegation expressed their condolences for the loss of life and firmly condemned the use of force.
