EU Monitoring Mission in Georgia extended for two years

16.12.2014
The Council has extended the mandate of the European Union Monitoring Mission in Georgia (EUMM Georgia) for two years until 14 December 2016.

EUMM Georgia is an unarmed civilian monitoring mission. Since October 2008, it has been supporting the stabilisation and normalisation of the situation on the ground, centred on full compliance with the six-point agreement signed by Georgia and Russia in August 2008.

EU High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy Federica Mogherini said: "Through the EU Monitoring Mission, the EU is providing concrete support for peace and stability in the region. The EU continues to firmly support the sovereignty and territorial integrity of Georgia within its internationally recognised borders."

EUMM contributes to the reduction of tensions through liaison, facilitation of contacts between parties and other confidence-building measures. The mission works in close coordination with partners, particularly the UN and the Organisation for Security and Cooperation in Europe (OSCE), and consistent with other EU activity.

The mission is headquartered in Tbilisi, Georgia. Mr Toivo Klaar has been Head of Mission since September 2013, and will soon be replaced by a new Head of Mission. EUMM has a budget of €18.3 million available for the first year of its renewed mandate.
