Statement of Head of Mission Dimitrios Karabalis on the visit by Her Royal Highness Crown Princess Victoria of Sweden

31.03.2023

Statement made during the joint Swedish Embassy-EUMM press conference on 30 March, at the Radisson Blu Iveria Hotel, Tbilisi

Dear ladies and gentlemen,

I am pleased to be here today to address you on behalf of the European Union Monitoring Mission in Georgia (EUMM). Over the past two days, we have had the honour of hosting the Her Royal Highness Crown Princess Victoria of Sweden, and we would like to take this opportunity to express our gratitude for her visit. We believe it is a testament to the important work that the EUMM is doing in Georgia.

Within the framework of the European Union’s Common Security and Defence Policy, the EU has twelve civilian missions active around the globe. They are unique instruments in the EU’s toolbox, essential for contributing to security in the EU neighbourhood.

When it comes to EUMM, our Mission is a vital part of the EU’s commitment to contribute to peace and stability in Georgia and the Southern Caucasus. We achieve this by monitoring the implementation of the ceasefire agreement, and by building confidence between all the parties involved.

We are proud of the work that we have done so far, since we arrived to Georgia 15 years ago. The situation in Georgia remains complex, and we continue to face many challenges. However, we remain committed to our mission, and we are determined to continue our work, 24/7, 365 days a year.

The Crown Princesss visit has been a valuable opportunity for us to showcase the work that we are doing. And to highlight the important role that the EU plays in promoting peace, security and stability in the Southern Caucasus. We hope that her visit will also strengthen even more the EU Member States’ support for our Mission.

In conclusion, I would like to thank again Her Royal Highness for her visit, and for her interest in our work. We would also like to thank Sweden for its continued commitment to our mission – 21 dedicated Swedish nationals are currently working with us. We strongly believe that by working together, we can help to create a more peaceful and stable future for the people of Georgia.

Thank you.
