On Wednesday 20 May, Mr. Michael Ambuhl, State Secretary of the Federal Department of Foreign Affairs (FDFA) of Switzerland visited the headquarters of the European Union Monitoring Mission (EUMM). He was accompanied by Mr. Norbert Barlocher, Regional Coordinator of the FDFA, and HE Ambassador Lorenzo Amberg of Switzerland.
The delegation was briefed by the Deputy Head of Mission (DHoM), Gilles Janvier, the Acting Chief of the Information and Reporting Section (ACIRS), and a Political Adviser. The briefing started with a general mission presentation by the ACIRS, about the history of the August 2008 conflict and the role of the EUMM. During this presentation, among others, the issues of IDPs, population figures in South Ossetia and Abkhazia, Georgian geography, contact procedures with the Russian Federation, South Ossetia, and Abkhazia, as well as the differences of maps, the village of Perevi, and the concept of territorial integrity were discussed. After the presentation, DHoM briefed the Swiss delegation more extensively about, among others, the mandate of the EUMM, and other International Organizations present in the area.
