EU Political and Security Committee Ambassadors visit EUMM

16.11.2009

On 12-13 November, Ambassadors from the EU Political and Security Committee (PSC) paid a visit to the EU Monitoring Mission (EUMM) in Georgia.

During the first day of the visit, the Delegation was briefed with an operational overview of the EUMM work by Hansjörg Haber (HoM) and Gilles Janvier (DHoM) as well as other chiefs of the Mission’s units. PSC Ambassadors also attended the EUMM patrol to Vaziani Military Base and IDP settlements in Tserovani, Sagouramo, Tsilkani, and Mukhrani. Moreover, Hansjörg Haber (HoM), together with Olof Skoog, Swedish PSC Ambassador and Chair of the PSC, answered questions from media representatives during a press briefing organised at the EUMM Headquarters. ‘We regard EUMM being one of the most significant EU Common Security and Defence Policy (CSDP) missions undertaken currently. It is absolutely clear that the security is not guaranteed in the conflict zones of Georgia and therefore we consider EUMM as indispensable asset to contribute to stabilisation after the 2008 war. We are impressed with the work of the Mission but the difficulty lies in the fact that the Mission is unable to implement the mandate throughout the entire territory of Georgia’, Ambassador Skoog said.

During the second day of the visit, the Delegation was hosted by the President of Georgia, Mikheil Saakashvili. Apart from meeting the President of Georgia, PSC Ambassadors met with Georgian Prime Minister, Minister of Foreign Affairs, Minister for Reintegration, representatives of the parliamentary and non-parliamentary Opposition as well as the EU Ambassadors accredited in Tbilisi. Besides this, Delegation was briefed by the EU Special Representative for the South Caucasus and the Head of European Commission Delegation to Georgia.
