On Wednesday 5 May, Georgian, de facto Abkhaz, Russian and EUMM representatives attended the 16th Incident Prevention and Response Mechanism meeting in Gali, under the auspices of the UN.

In an engaged and constructive atmosphere, there was an exchange of information and clarification about recent incidents, as well as a follow up of the situation concerning incidents reported during the previous IPRM meeting.

Other issues discussed included ensuring unhindered freedom of movement, with particular emphasis for people in need of medical assistance. Participants once again reiterated their commitment to ensure other parties received advance notice of information about planned activities which may be sensitive for incident prevention and confidence building purposes. The use of the ‘hotline’ was reaffirmed as a useful way of sharing operational information, in particular in dealing with incidents.

The next meeting is scheduled to take place in Gali on 25 May 2010.
