DELEGATION OF DEFENCE ATTACHES VISITS EUMM

23.06.2011

On 22 June, a delegation of Defence Attachés from Austria, Belgium, Germany, Netherlands and Norway, all based in Ankara, paid a visit to the EU Monitoring Mission in Georgia.

At the EUMM Headquarters they were welcomed by the EUMM Head of Operations, Gerard Fischer, and received a general briefing on the role, achievements and challenges of the Mission.

Subsequently, the delegation followed an EUMM patrol from Field Office Gori to the villages of Ergneti and Didi Mejvriskevi situated on the Administrative Boundary Line (ABL) with South Ossetia. They had an opportunity to learn about the work of the monitoring teams and the environment in which they operate. The visitors were particularly interested in the security and militarisation situation on both sides of the ABL as well as the living conditions of the Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs). They were impressed by the overall improvement in stability that has taken place since the start of the Mission.
