Patrolling in all circumstances

15.02.2012
Despite the harsh weather and challenging road conditions in recent weeks, the EU Monitoring Mission in Georgia has continued to patrol the areas adjacent to the Administrative Boundary Lines of Abkhazia and South Ossetia. The area close to the South Ossetian ABL has been especially difficult with mountainous, often unkempt dirt roads.

Sometimes the terrain has been too difficult even for 4WD vehicles and the EUMM monitors have continued their patrolling on foot to reach the most remote locations. They are monitoring compliance with the 2008 ceasefire agreement, but also reporting on issues that have an effect on the local population, such as freedom of movement, or problems with regard to the ABL. Their presence has contributed to stabilising the situation and their objective reports often result in focusing the attention of local authorities or NGOs to specific issues and problems.
