Chief of the Joint Staff of the Latvian National Armed forces visiting EUMM

24.05.2012

On May 23 the EU Monitoring Mission in Georgia received a Latvian delegation consisting of Brigadier-General Andis Dilans, Chief of the Joint Staff of the Latvian National Armed forces; Lieutenant-Colonel Janis Micans, Defence attaché to Georgia, Turkey, Azerbaijan and Bulgaria; and Ms. Eliza Elerte, Deputy Chief of the International Affairs Department of the Latvian Ministry of Defence.

The delegation was welcomed by Ambassador Andrzej Tyszkiewicz, the Head of Mission. The Latvian guests were briefed about the changes in emphasis of the work of the Mission to meet the current circumstances on the ground. This means a greater concentration on maintaining stability and enhancing confidence building, whilst remaining impartial. One of the key confidence building tools is the Incident Prevention and Response Mechanism. The next meeting within this framework in the South Ossetian theatre, co-facilitated by EUMM and OSCE is taking place in Ergneti on 25 May.
