UK Royal College of Defence Studies visits EUMM Field Office Gori

30.05.2012
On 30 May Field Office Gori of the EU Monitoring Mission in Georgia received a delegation from the United Kingdom Royal College of Defence Studies consisting of twenty representatives from various countries worldwide.
The visitors were welcomed by  Michael  Stephenson, Deputy Field Office Chief and were given a presentation about the Mission’s mandate, structure and responsibilities. The briefing focused on areas of particular interest in Field Office Gori’s area of responsibility.
Afterwards, the students joined patrols to the Administrative Boundary Line (ABL) and a settlement for Internally Displaced Persons (IDP). Both field visits were directly related to the issues mentioned in the presentation;  the visitors obtained information about the significant issues facing  the European Union Monitoring Mission concerning maintaining security along the ABL and the freedom of movement for the local population. The village of Kveshi that they visited is one of these examples. Due to a recent meeting by the Technical Working Group under the Incident Prevention and Response Mechanism, it is now safer for farmers to be able to carry out their agricultural work.  The visit to the IDP settlement in Didi Khurvaleti allowed the students to become more familiar with the lives of the IDPs and their daily challenges.
