Presentation in an IDP School in Poti

14.06.2012
The Human Security Team of the EU Monitoring Mission Field Office Zugdidi delivered a presentation on Tuesday, June 12, at the IDP School No. 21 in Poti in front of over 65 students and teachers. As an important component of the human security team’s work- the access to education of IDP students- the presentation aimed to provide basic information about the European Union in general: history, member states, fundamental values, and about the European Union Monitoring Mission in Georgia.

The mandate and responsibilities of EUMM  on the ground, pictures from various patrols, as well as a map of the field offices and their areas of responsibilities were shown. The atmosphere was friendly and based on interaction with the students and teachers, several questions were raised during the Q&A session. The students were interested in getting information about the requirements for Georgia to become an EU member, if the EUMM teams go also to Gali and Sukhumi or if the human rights situation in the country has improved.

After the theoretical presentation, the students were introduced to the practical aspects of EUMM patrolling. Full of enthusiasm, they climbed into the armoured car, they were able to test the night vision equipment, the binoculars, the camera, the GPS, the compass and they put on the flak jackets.

The presentation was designed to offer a comprehensive and accessible picture of EUMM’s work in Georgia, which was very much appreciated by both the pupils and staff. Many other schools have also asked Field Office Zudidi to visit them in the future to explain what EUMM is all about.
