EU Monitoring Mission - Supporting 16 Days of Activism - Helping to End Violence against Women and Girls

25.11.2018
The EU Monitoring Mission (EUMM) Georgia actively supports the international campaign “16 Days of Activism against Gender-Based Violence” which takes place each year from the 25 November (International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women and Girls) to the 10 December inclusive (International Human Rights Day).

The EUMM Campaign in 2018 will contribute to the campaign aim of ending violence against women and girls, with Mission activities focused on raising awareness and enhancing empowerment among the conflict- affected population - particularly those living in settlements for internally displaced persons - in the vicinity of the Administrative Boundary Lines with South Ossetia and Abkhazia, and in collective centres.

EUMM staff in Tbilisi Headquarters and Monitors from Field Offices in Zugdidi, Gori and Mtskheta, will carry out a variety of other activities in support of the campaign. Monitors will facilitate discussions and activities in schools. Additionally, they will hold roundtable discussions and Information Sharing Meetings with NGOs and interactive discussions with police and in some Universities. EUMM Monitors will meet daily with conflict-affected men and women to discuss issues related to violence against women and girls.

The Mission will again this year, in the spirit of positive change, support the ‘White Ribbon’ campaign. White Ribbons have become an internationally recognised symbol of the fight against gender-based violence. Wearing a white ribbon is a personal ‘pledge’ to never commit, condone or remain silent about violence against women and girls – which is why you will see EUMM staff wearing the ribbon across Georgia.

EUMM Georgia endeavours, by example, to assist in eradicating injustice, empowering women and girls, and emphasizing the duty of all to end violence against women and girls.
