Joint Statement by High Representative Catherine Ashton and Commissioner Štefan Füle on the unanimous adoption of an amendment to the Constitution of Georgia

The Spokespersons of Catherine Ashton, High Representative of the Union for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy and Vice President of the Commission, and Štefan Füle, Commissioner for Enlargement and European Neighbourhood Policy, made today the following statement:

"High Representative/Vice President Ashton and Commissioner Füle welcome the unanimous adoption yesterday by the Georgian parliament of an important amendment to Georgia`s constitution. The cross-party consensus that underpins this agreement demonstrates the commitment of all sides in Georgian politics to good governance in the national interest. The constitutional amendment, which confirms the role of the democratically-elected parliament in approving the appointment of a new government, consolidates Georgia`s democracy and sets an important precedent for co-operation between all parties in Georgian politics. The High Representative and Commissioner Füle call on all stakeholders in Georgia to continue to work together in this constructive spirit in the best interests of the Georgian people."
